Lacquerware or "Japanese Shikki"

Japanese lacquerware is called "Shikki". Wooden objects such as dishes, furniture, boxes of every kind, are given succeeding coats of lacquer, Urushi, and dried, polished, made up into Shikki. The traditional skill of the craftsmen is fully applied to achieve the best quality and beautiful art. Due to the demanding skill and expertise involved, qualified craftsmen are few. To support the continuation of this distinctly Japanese art, the Japanese government has established 6 national regional centres providing funding for education and exhibiting artists works at these locations.
